Generally, there are two kinds of dental restorations, direct and indirect.

Fillings put into a ready cavity in a single go, is called direct restoration. It consists dental amalgam, resin and glass ionomers and some resin fillings. In this method, the dentist readies the tooth and puts the filling in the cavity. The dentist then adjusts it after another appointment.

Indirect restorations may take two or more visits. It consists of inlays, veneers, crowns, onlays and bridges that might be made with gold or alloys, ceramics and other. At the first visit, the tooth is being prepared for restoration and the area to be restored was marked with an impression that will be transferred to dental laboratory that designs the dental restoration. The prepared filling restoration is cemented to the cavity at the next appointment. The dentist also makes adjustments in the second appointment.
